The Real Cost of a Bowl of Bird's Nest Soup (It's Not $100)

Ten Lei Yen rebuttal video thumbnail

In our last video, we talked about why a bowl of bird's nest soup at a restaurant can run over $100. Since then, a lot of people have asked us the same question: does Ten Lei Yen charge that much too?

No. That $100+ figure is a restaurant price — it includes the dining room, the service, and the restaurant's own margin stacked on top of the raw ingredient cost. It was never our product's price. So in our newest video, we walked through the real math, step by step, using our own best-selling grade and our own current listed price.

The math, in plain numbers

We used Blue Label Supreme, our premium whole-nest grade, sold today at $750 for a 250g box of roughly 24 whole pieces — that's about $31.25 per nest.

A traditional home-cooked pot uses 3 whole nests, double-boiled with rock sugar, and yields about a liter of finished soup. At a recommended 6 tablespoons per serving, that's about 11 servings per pot. Here's the math:

  • 3 nests × $31.25 = $93.75 for the pot
  • 1 liter ÷ 6 tablespoons per serving ≈ 11 servings
  • $93.75 ÷ 11 servings = $8.44 per serving

Not $100. $8.44 — on the most premium whole-nest grade we sell, at today's listed price, with no hidden fees.

What it looks like across grades

We believe in pricing transparency across every tier we carry, not just the top one. Using the same 3-nest pot, 6-tablespoon serving formula:

  • Blue Label Supreme (White): $750 / 250g, ~24 pieces → $8.44/serving
  • Red Label, Super Dried (White): $650 / 250g, ~29–32 pieces → $5.75/serving
  • 5A (AAAAA) White: $475 / 250g, ~28–31 pieces → $4.35/serving

Every number above comes straight from our current listed prices — nothing estimated, nothing rounded in our favor.
